Special Marriage Act 1954

Marriages between Muslims, Christians and interreligious couples can be registered under a special marriage act 1954. Marriage registration under special marriage act 1954 is a 30-day process. There is provision of serving notices at the addresses of the parties and displaying on the notice board of the office of marriage registrar having jurisdiction. If there is no objection within 30 days, marriage registration can be completed and a marriage certificate will be issued.

After the submission of application along with documents, both parties must be present to issue a public notice inviting objections. Marriage registration is completed 30 days after the date of notice. SDM will decide on any objections received during notice period. Both parties, man and woman as well as three witnesses, must be present on the date of registration/solemnization.
